Owen D. Coll, V.S.,
M.R.C.V.S., Initiator of
the movement to found Limerick
Annual Horse show
in 1890, He was a member of well-known County limerick
family farmed at Knockmore,
Bruree. He was born in Kilmallock in 1854 and was
one of the
best known members of his
profession in Ireland .He was a veterinary Inspector for
Limerick CountyCouncil and
Limerick corporation and other public
body,s and an
expert
horseman, he was a member of
the county limerick
hunt and a director of the limerick
race company
and was
closely
associated with limerick horse show up to time of his
death. he was highly
esteemed as a sportsman, as a praticioner in his profession
and
for his sound business acumen. He died at his home in
upper mallow st
on the 16th july, 1912 and was
buried in dromin cemetary.

David J
Dwane (1882-1960) was a cousin of Robert Coll
my grand father, and he was also the Author of first Biog-
raphy of De valera, Published
january 1922. When the
Author was seniour official in kilmallock post office...........

Nephew, Owen D. Coll
(1882-1940 ) Was a very succesfull
Athlete,
and
came to prominence at the Amateur Athletics and Boxing Club Sports
at the markets field on the 12 th june, 1901, 1902 was his peak year
and he had great wins at Bruff, Kilmallock, Bruree, And at the
Seventeenth G.A.A. All Ireland Athletics Championship at Limerick, He
was a member of Limerick hurling team that had a sensational win over
London Irish -then All Ireland Senior Hurling Champions on the 23rd
May, 1904,Owen Coll collected
more than a hundred prizes
in his time on the track and he still looked every inch the champion
many years after he had stopped competing. Owen D. Coll died suddenly
on the 8th august,
1940 (aged 58 years) while still in the service of the county council
and was buried
in Dromin Cemetary. Following Owens
Coll,s Death, the vacancy was filled
by John Joyce (mainchin Seoighe) from Tankardstown, Kilmallock, a near
neighbour - Owen Coll.....had
three brothers and three sisters,
Richard, Robert,Patrick, Maggie,Babe,Josie.
Owen was Married to mary and they had seven children, named;
Eamon,Richard,Owen, Robert,Paddy,Bridie, and Theresa,

Owen Coll was an athlete of note, though the COLL name was
Renowned in athletics ever before Owen's achievements made
an impact. His uncle Robert Bob Coll)
of maidstown Castle
Dromin, Second chairman of limerick county council (1902-1905)
was the most
brilliant of a family old- time athletes. Owen grew up in this
tradition.
Owen D. Coll was
born at knockmore, bruree in 1882. He was a
classmate of
EAMON DE VALERA and
Tim Hannon. He Started work with limerick county
council 1901 when he was ninteen years. Later he came to live, with his
wife
Mary Coll (a second
cousin) at no. 7 St. John's Villas, Mulgrave
street, Limerick..
